In other words, I already had these through Windows Update–one three weeks ago, and a few minutes ago it’s came up in the notification center, equipped with a that I need them ( again!.Security Update for Windows XP (KB2585542)Ĭumulative Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB2900986) It told me I needed a critical security update (Catalogue Database Corruption in Windows) after I ‘successfully installed it’ through several reboots, and now it’s stopped. Besides, the “.net framework 1.1” isn’t exactly a critical security update item that would come through a Security Bulletin anyway. But these were installed through Windows Update, and the notification in the sys tray was from Win Update with it’s little microicon. If you do that, the item won’t necessarily show up on WU History of installed updates. When I clicked them, I recognized two which recently installed updates that had been installed through Win Update–because most of the time I use the security bulletins which are much more reliable and don’t miss critical updates. I was ‘prodded’ in the Sys Tray aka ” XP notification center” that critical updates were ready to install.
3) It doesn’t record the download even though you successfully installed it thru WU and it’s on add/remove. 2) It tells you you already have a later version when you don’t have it at all. 1) It tells you you need things you already have. This is an example of one of the three common WU fallacies. Close the window and try installling the update. Locate the CatRoot2 folder and rename it to CR2OLD.Ħ.
This folder should be located in C:WindowsSystem32.ĥ. Please refer the below mentioned steps for renaming the catroot2 folder. Once you try the update again it will recreate the folder and start with fresh non-corrupted files. If this does not help, try renaming the catroot2 folder to something else. When the search is complete, delete all copies of the WUTemp folder. Make sure that the Look In option indicates “Local Hard Drives”.ĥ. Type “wutemp” without the quotation marks.ģ. Click on Start/Search and then select All Files and Folders.Ģ. Kenneth, let us try to delete copies of Wutemp folder.ġ. I will put it here for anyone else that might have a problem.Īfter doing some research, I have found that such issue can occur if some traces of past downloads or corrupted files are present in Wutemp folder or trust database of the system is corrupt. Actually I didn’t find what I needed there, but I actually got a response from a MS tech this morning and his advice worked.
